Comparison
Group Space vs Band
Updated 2026-07-31
Band is genuinely feature-rich and free, and a lot of teams run on it happily. The question worth asking is what pays for it.
What Band genuinely does well
Band covers a lot of ground at no cost: posts, a shared calendar, polls, photo albums, chat, and files, for groups of almost any size. If you want one free app that does most things for a team or a club, it is a reasonable answer and plenty of groups are content with it.
Where it starts costing you
It is ad-supported. Free products for large groups are usually paid for with advertising and the data that makes advertising work. That is the trade you are making, and it is worth making knowingly when the content is photographs of children and twenty families’ contact details.
It behaves like a social network. A feed, reactions, engagement mechanics, and notification patterns designed to bring you back. For a class group, that is more product than the job needs, and it turns coordination into something faintly performative.
Content is readable by the platform. Standard for the category, and the reason the previous two points are possible.
What Group Space does differently
The design goal is the opposite of engagement. There is no feed and no algorithm, threads are chronological and topic-scoped, and photo albums have no likes and no comments, because a photo of your kid at the picnic does not need a score.
Nothing is ad-supported on any tier. The organizer’s subscription is the whole business model, which means the people using it are the customers rather than the inventory. And the personal content is encrypted on the device before it is sent, so it is not readable by whoever operates the servers.
The honest trade-offs
Band is free and Group Space is not. The free tier here runs a real group of up to fifty members with every feature that matters, but a bigger group means the organizer pays.
Band also supports very large communities and has more surface area, including files and a richer set of group tools. Group Space is deliberately narrower: five jobs, done for a small, closed, kid-centered group.
Which to pick
Stay with Band if you have a large group, you want maximum features at no cost, and you are comfortable with an ad-supported model.
Move if your group is a class, team, or troop of families rather than a community, if you would rather not have a feed and reactions in the middle of coordinating, or if you want the content to be unreadable to the company hosting it.
