Comparison
Group Space vs Remind
Updated 2026-07-31
Remind is a teacher's tool, and it is good at being one. It was never meant to be where the parents organize the class party.
What Remind genuinely does well
Getting a message from a teacher or coach to every family, fast, without anyone exchanging phone numbers. It reaches people by text, which means it reaches everyone, and it protects the teacher’s personal number. For its actual job it is hard to beat, and nothing here suggests replacing it.
Where it does not fit
It is not a parent’s tool. The account, the class, and the control belong to the school or the teacher. Parents cannot start a group, own it, or run it, and when the year ends the class goes with it.
It is announcement-shaped. Broadcast out, limited reply in. Real back-and-forth between parents about who is driving on Friday is not what it is for.
No directory. Deliberately. It exists so people do not have to swap numbers, which is exactly the opposite of what the class contact list needs to do.
No shared albums. The picnic photos have no home in it.
What Group Space does differently
It is the parent side of the same class, and the two coexist perfectly well. The teacher keeps sending announcements through Remind. The parents get a directory that fills itself in, shared albums at full quality, events with RSVPs, threads for the carpool question, and Chip In for the teacher gift, in a group the parents own and that carries on year to year if they want it to.
It needs nothing from the school and no adoption by anyone official. And because contacts and photos are encrypted before they leave the device, the class list lives somewhere it is not readable by whoever runs the servers.
The honest trade-offs
Remind reaches people over SMS, which means it reaches the family who installs nothing. Any app, including this one, asks people to join something. That is a real difference for the last few families in any group.
Remind is also free to the parent, and school-sanctioned, which matters if the communication is official.
Which to pick
Keep Remind for anything from the teacher. It is the right tool and it is already working.
Add Group Space for the parent-run part: the contact list, the party, the photos, the carpool, and the gift. They are different jobs, and trying to make Remind do the second one is what leaves parents back in a group text.
